History
--------------------------------------------
Champoeg was a small settlement town in the 18th century. The British had established an outpost of the Hudson's Bay trading company. They were mainly interested in pelts. The townsfolk of Champoeg got together one day under the guise of discussing wildlife problems and voted on whether or not to form their own government and boot the British out. Fifty-two men voted for and fifty voted against. According to the reenactment video we watched, "This MAY have been a turning point in the American Revolution." The town rested next to the Willamette River (pronounced "Will-ya-may") and consisted of a half French street names and half English. Napoleon St spit the town into its two parts. In 1861 the Willamette River swelled up due to extremely heavy snow melt. Shortly, the town was swept away in about 23 feet of water. In 1996 another flood of similar proportions would come to remind people of the town that once existed there. Today, only street posts give your imagination a vision of the township that hopefully built itself by the Willamette River. The entire area has become an Oregon State Park ground, complete with a museum, showers, yurts, and RV hookups.
